Be Humble, Sit Down

being-humbleThese are lyrics touted by famous rapper/writer Kendrick Lamar. It’s not necessarily the lyrics in the song that get me (although there are thought provoking lyrics in there and… a lotta cussin’), but it’s the energy behind it and the infectious beat that makes me shake my tail to it.

Beyond some of the lyrics, Kendrick is a conscious thinker and wants to be a light in the world (and is to many), and I appreciate that.

This song is certainly not for everyone. There’s all kinds of controversy about what Kendrick’s lyrics mean.

But I love a person who shows up with good intention, is convicted about who they are and the message they want to share, and puts their work out there regardless of what others may think.

They know their work will touch the right people and the others can go the other way.

I’m not exactly sure what he means when “he” says “Be Humble…” I can speculate, but it doesn’t matter.

I want to talk about what I think when he says “Be Humble.”

For me the word “humble” as it’s traditionally thought of, doesn’t feel right to me.

Traditional thoughts on being humble seem to say… don’t be too big, be super kind, don’t step on anyone’s toes (or belief systems), don’t stand out (no matter how awesome you are)… Basically don’t be yourself.

Beyonce couldn’t be this kind of “humble” if she wanted to.

Even the dictionary defines “Humble” as “having or showing a modest or low estimate of one’s importance.”  Boo hiss…

Part of me gets why people are conditioned to believe that’s the way you should be, but a big part of me says “hell nah.”

I think there’s a general feeling about not liking the behavior of people who are too arrogant, pompous or too braggadocious, but when I see a really “arrogant” person, I know it’s simply insecurity, so I don’t care.

True humility to me… is about being bigger, more confident… not small.

In fact I think it’s “arrogant” to keep yourself small… for who? and for what reason would that work in your favor?

Even the most “humble” altruistic person would want you to live a great life & express yourself fully.

So what’s this bow down, humble shit. To who?

I don’t believe in a God/Source or a Universe that wants that.

I believe in the God that is expressing itself through me and wants me to be the biggest most fully self expressed version of me I CHOOSE to be.

Even if some don’t like it.

Cause there will always be those reflections. Whatcha’ gonna do?

To quote some over-quoted quotes….

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us. We ask ourselves “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?” Actually, who are you not to be?… There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.”

“We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us, it’s in everyone, and as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same: as we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

I hear that these quotes were said by Nelson Mandela and/or Marianne Williamson. Who cares. They are awesome truths…

True humility (in my belief system… since you may disagree and that’s awesome) is about freeing yourself to attain higher levels of fearlessness, as you reflect and express that which is YOU.

Not because you want to be better than other people, or perform, or compensate for whatever you think you’re lacking, but because you wish to be who you really are and you realize that BEING who you really are is the best gift you can give to the world.

Yes, you will be noticed, you will stand out, you will be a symbol of rejection and acceptance and all of it will be fucking O.K.

Being you in the face of others who want you to bend and contort yourself in ways that make them feel comfortable with you, is truly being of service.

If you’re afraid to shine, you’re not being humble.

So be humble, and sit down.

Be humble enough to spend a little time getting to know yourself more everyday.

Be humble enough to sit with yourself and CONNECT with the God that is YOU, with that feeling that is in your heart, and choose to feel the way you want to feel, realizing YOU are cause to your circumstances, and not the other way around.

Then when you operate in the world, your message will be clearer for those you’re meant to serve, you’ll have the balls to show up and share your work, you’ll be more and more fearless, triggerless and doubtless about yourself and your chosen path.

You will speak your truth and live it.

Even if you never believed in a God, or a Source, or anything woo-woo ever in life, I know you feel that sense that there’s something BIG in you (so many inappropriate innuendos just popped into my head, don’t mind me 😉) something GREAT in you (that’s better).

Sure, your insecurities and old beliefs will come to the surface as you’re on your path, that’s what alignment with who you are does, it cleans you out so that you can become more masterful at being yourSELF. At being YOUR GIFT TO THE WORLD.

This is a high stakes game, but it’ll be the best work you’ve ever done for yourself. Promise.
